FAQ
What is a murder mystery game?
A murder mystery game is a set of materials designed to help a host run an interactive murder mystery experience. They typically include character profiles, clues, secret information, and instructions that guide players through a fictional crime. The materials may be physical or digital and participants use these materials to uncover evidence, interact with each other, and solve the mystery.
Can I make it a surprise party?
We generally don’t recommend keeping a murder mystery party as a complete surprise. While you’re free to run your event however you like, guests tend to enjoy the experience more when they know what to expect. Because murder mystery parties are interactive and often involve dressing up, giving people advance notice helps build excitement and participation.
If you’re planning a surprise birthday party, it’s best to bring in the murder mystery host after the surprise has taken place. Once the surprise happens, there is usually 30–45 minutes of meet and greet while the guest of the moment greets everyone. This makes it difficult to start the game straight away. For example, if the surprise is at 7:00pm, have your host arrive around 7:30pm so they can set up and begin once things settle.
If the host arrives before the surprise, they may be left waiting with little to do. Similarly, for workplace events, it’s better not to surprise your colleagues—letting them know in advance will lead to a more engaged and enjoyable experience.
How long does a murder mystery dinner party typically take?
Most dinner games run between 2 to 2.5 hours, which aligns perfectly with a standard two or three-course restaurant meal service.
How does a murder mystery dinner work alongside meal service?
The game is structured to run smoothly in distinct rounds between your food courses. Guests mingle over starters, dig into clues during the main meal, and make their final accusations right before dessert, ensuring your food stays hot and the gameplay stays fast-paced.
Do we need to hire a restaurant in Chicago, or can we host it at home?
You can host anywhere! Our murder mystery dinners work brilliantly in private home dining rooms, rented Airbnb spaces, function rooms, or local restaurants with private dining areas.
Is this suitable for both small intimate groups and large group banquets?
Yes. We offer scalable character formats designed specifically for cozy groups of 4 to 10 guests as well as large multi-table corporate dinners with 100+ attendees.
What happens if a venue or restaurant in Chicago has noisy background music?
We recommend booking a private or semi-private dining space where possible. If you are in a main dining room, our host guides and printable materials ensure every guest has physical or digital clue sheets so no crucial details are missed.
Do guests need to dress up according to the theme?
Dressing up is lots of fun but we know you may not wish to be in costume in a public place. Costumes or no costumes are both great.
Can we run a self-hosted murder mystery dinner without hiring an actor?
Absolutely. Our self-hosted and DIY game kits include simple, step-by-step instructions so the host can play along or designate a guest to facilitate the rounds between courses.
What if our guest count changes at the last minute?
Our game formats feature flexible mechanics, so an unexpected drop-out or last-minute RSVP won't ruin the storyline or game balance.
